The Atkinson Connection That Isn’t
The new season of the British crime drama MobLand has arrived, and among its executive producers is a name that may sound immediately familiar to British audiences: Ivan Atkinson.
The surname is unusual enough to raise a natural question. Could Ivan Atkinson be related to Rowan Atkinson—the actor best known around the world as Mr. Bean?
At first glance, the theory seems plausible. Both men are British, both work in the entertainment industry, and both have connections to the British film business. In an industry where family connections can sometimes open doors, the coincidence is hard to ignore.
But the available public record points in a different direction.
Ivan Atkinson is a film producer and writer whose credits include Wrath of Man and MobLand.
Rowan Atkinson's documented immediate family, meanwhile, includes his brothers Rodney and Rupert, his children Benjamin, Lily and Isla, and other publicly identified relatives. There is no known Ivan among them.
A review of publicly available biographical information and family records turns up no apparent connection between the two men.
So, despite the shared surname—and despite the fact that both operate in the same British entertainment world—the evidence currently available suggests that Ivan Atkinson is not a relative of Rowan Atkinson.
Sometimes a familiar name is just a familiar name. And in this case, the Atkinson connection appears to end there.
